We believe it is vital to stop consuming all natural resources to protect our air, soil, water. The need for lower energy bills was not a major reason we installed our system, but it’s wonderful that many months we are not even charged for our electricity - only for the delivery.  We are now working to have   our community remove itself  from the “grid” and become 100% dependent on renewable energy.

Solar energy, even in northern Illinois, is an outstanding resource which we can use for more than just a good tan. My wife and I feel it is very important that our country move toward renewable, clean energy systems. Our decision to install a solar system was not based as much on achieving long term cost savings, but rather a desire to reduce our carbon footprint and encourage others to do the same. As a result of our solar system, combined with other practical conservation methods, we are proud to be one of the most energy efficient households in our neighborhood.

My interest in solar probably goes back to when I was a young boy who liked to play with electricity. Now I am a semi-retired environmental engineer with a passion for protecting the environment for future generations. As an environmental advocate, I see the value of solar energy as part of an environmentally and economically viable solution to America’s energy needs. Additionally, using solar increased our awareness of how we consume electricity. My wife Bonnie and I have reduced electrical household demand substantially through energy efficiency and conservation measures. This means the solar equipment will supply much of what we need.

I've been researching Solar Panel technology and economics for several years. I knew the installation costs were coming down and electricity prices would keep rising so at some point soon solar panels would become a good investment, even way up here is northern Illinois.

With the 30% Federal Tax Credit and Solar Renewable Energy Credits the payback period for installing solar panels has now dropped to right around seven years. After that my 15 panel array will continue to generate between $600->$900 worth of electricity each year for another 18 years.

The passage of the Illinois Clean Jobs Bill signaled for me that the technology, economics, and political stability in Illinois had all come together to make it the right time to install solar panels.

The all black panels look fantastic and I'm thrilled to be generating enough clean energy to cover between 30-40% of my homes energy needs.

I've posted my research and installation specifications here for anyone that's interested: https://MySolarCalc.com

As a retired Electrical Engineer that had worked with electric power most of my professional life, I was interested in experimenting with alternate energy sources - especially grid-tied PV in conjunction with ComEd's real time pricing.  With a new roof installed in 2015, it was the prefect time to get proposals for a roof PV system.  To date my grid-tie PV system has exceeded my expectations.  For the past 12 months July 2016 - July 2017), my total ComEd bill was $190 with 6 of the 12 months having $0.00 due.

This is the second home that I have converted to Solar PV. What motivated me originally was concern over climate change and not wanting to be part of that problem as I have grandchildren and they will be paying a huge price for this human caused crisis. I quickly learned that the economic benefits are huge and with my new system it just keeps getting better. In about 8 years I will have free electricity which I also use to charge my car as well and enjoy those savings as well. So having a Solar PV system is as standard a part of my lifestyle as a furnace or air conditioner.

I started with an interest in wind turbines in 1992.  After experimenting with homemade versions, I erected a factory built 3 kW wind turbine on an 80' tall pole tower. (1995)
I added a small solar PV array (1998) then added a ground mounted array (2000) and then the larger grid tie PV system in 2011.
An EV car was considered because I have been making too much power every year, so I self-justified it in July 2017.

Our home and both cars (Tesla S & X) are completely powered, heated and cooled by electricity. So we decided to get all of our energy from a nuclear fusion power plant conveniently located just a little over 8 minutes from our house in Batavia. (8 minutes and 19 seconds, to be exact!)

I installed the PV system for the following reasons: 1. To reduce the carbon footprint of my primary residence; 2. To increase the value of my residence by the money saved my reduced consumption and earned by solar RECs over a 20 year period; 3. To demonstrate that solar panels can be an attractive installation atop a pavilion in our garden; and 4.To show others that PV panels are an easy way to save energy.

Electricity prices are not going down and it was the right thing to do. I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint.
My system was installed on September 2, 2015. It consists of the following components:
- 128 CdTe Solar panels (10.2 Kw)
- 32 SolarEdge Power Optimizers
- 11 Kw SolarEdge Inverter
- 15 Kw Generac EcoGen solar compatible whole house generator

We need renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions, to slow down global warming and to live more sustainably!
We have been looking at doing this for several years, and the prices came down, and the rebates, and tax incentives helped a lot!

A solar system completes our sustainable, energy efficient home. We also have back up batteries if the grid goes down. It will be ready for the electric car future too. Our 3 acre property has a woodland savanna restoration and a prairie restoration. It is available in 2018.

We installed a PV system because we wanted to reduce our energy use footprint on earth. The system was designed to provide almost all of our electrical needs including our Nissan Leaf which we use all the time. We are finding that we have not had to pay an electric bill in 5-6 months.

We were interested in sustainabilty and in reducing our carbon footprint to a great extent.  Today's technology and various incentives really helped us achieve our goals rather easily and cost effectively.  It makes us happy that our family was able to make a very small but important contribution towards a sustainable planet.

We wanted to "Go Green" and take advantage of the incentives being offered in Srec's and Tax Credits. By going Solar we help the environment, and save money. Win Win!!
