I installed solar because I want an energy source that doesn't diminish my world.  I like to breathe clean air.  I want to be part of the solution.

Over 20 years ago I had looked at going solar when I first bought my house. At the time, the efficiency and cost wasn't feasible; payback time was estimated to be about 20-25 years.  Today, right now, it's approximately 7 years!

We have one planet.  What can you do to make it a better place for not just you, but for your kids? And their children?

It was the thing to do, going along with our energy conserving house self-built in 1983. The PV size is needed to heat water for our animals in the winter, exhaust greenhouses in summer; excess credited by Ameren in the summer. System currently consists of 96 panels (21.7 kW), ground mounted, installed in 3 sections, retilted 4x/yr to optimum tilt, plus 10 kW turbine. Note the solar is essentially maintenance free, wind is several hundred $/year. Production of 2012 installed 8 kW array has been 13% greater than estimated for equivalent power 30° constant tilt ground mount and 33% greater than a 14° tilt roof mount.

The original installation was done not only to “do the right thing” for renewable energy, but also to provide backup power for a home office, and to play with the latest technology. It had the added bonus of providing some shading, and therefore reducing heat load, on a south facing roof right over the home office. The latest round of solar panels (completely filling the roof and nearly tripling capacity) were put in to take advantage of the Grow Solar / Solar Urbana-Champaign program.

Having worked for Ruyle Mechanical, one of Central Illinois largest Solar Installers, for 39 years as a Steamfitter / HVAC Service Technician I decided to do a self install of my 7.8 KWh solar system. I have seen may changes over the years to improve energy efficiencies in the HVAC field and decided to improve my own energy footprint by using less energy from the grid.

The first portion of my install was 20 - 285 watt modules.  I then added 6 - 250 watt modules, and finished out the install two months ago with 2 - 300 watt modules.  All 28 modules are mounted on Ironridge racking using Enphase S280 micro inverters.  With the Enphase reporting system I can easily pull up information about my system with my phone or any computer.  You can see my system at the following web site:

Harnessing the power of the sun as a means to support our energy needs is a method that we believe is extremely under utilized, yet clearly has the potential to change the way we power our world. I wanted to leave a positive legacy in tribute and gratitude to my late parents Al and Milly Slabon and brother, Dr. Wayne Slabon.

After capitalizing on available incentives to drive down the already declining cost of solar technology, we are now enjoying the benefits of free, clean, renewable energy.

My grandfather installed a solar heating system when I was a child which helped me understand the benefits of such systems. As an adult I decided to install solar as a way to both save energy and do my part to be environmentally friendly. I started with a 5.0kW install back in 2012 and was able to install another 4.86kW array in 2014 to offset 100% of our annual consumption.

We decided to install solar power generation to reduce energy cost and environmental impact of our home and transportation. In the first 3 years, the system has saved $3,500 in electrical bills and $1,800 in gasoline by driving 21,000 miles on solar energy. 51 MW-hr of energy generated by the system over this period has additionally avoided 71,000 pounds of released CO2 by saving 53,000 pounds of coal.

Everyone has different hobbies and ours is environmental conservation. We hope to offset the energy needs of our house and electric car (Tesla Model S). We just finished a remodel to the house and will be transforming the yard to native plants to build a better habitat for wildlife and minimize water use.

As an educator and mother with a passion for environmentalist justice issues and member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps., I wanted to act with intention as a model to inspire what people can do in the face of our changing global climate to decrease their carbon footprint. I wanted to leave a positive legacy in tribute and gratitude to my late parents Al and Milly Slabon and brother, Dr. Wayne Slabon. Our father Al had been a successful builder in Chicago in his heyday and he would have appreciated the good business sense of this renewable energy system along with the look of the Sunmodule black panels that do not detract from the beauty of the prairie style design of our home.
